 How can I apply for Malawi Citizenship?

Apart from Immigration offices in Malawi, applications for Citizenship can be submitted through the Embassy. You can do this by compiling all required documents and submitting them to the Embassy.

Does Malawi allow Dual Citizenship?

We are pleased to inform the public that Malawi has now approved that certain individuals can hold another citizenship in addition to Malawi Citizenship. This provision was introduced in early 2022 and is now fully operational.

Am I eligible for Malawi Dual Citizenship?

Only two categories of people are eligible to acquire another Citizenship in addition to Malawi Citizenship; Citizens of either birth or descent. Citizens by birth were born in Malawi and at the time of their birth, at least one of their parents was a Malawian citizen. On the other hand, citizens by descent were born outside Malawi and at the time of their birth, at least one of their parents was a Malawian citizen by birth.

How about my children who were born outside Malawi?

Minors will automatically qualify for a Malawian passport as long they were born to either one or both Malawian citizens by birth. This is regardless of whether they hold another citizenship or not.​
